Viktor Tatarczuk, a former Polish military officer, was a Soviet prisoner of war from 1944 to 1945 at the end of World War II in Poland. A survivor of the Katyn Massacre in 1943, he was imprisoned in Sachsenhausen-Oranienburg concentration camp in Germany before being transferred to a POW camp in Czechoslovakia. After World War II, he escaped from the communist regime and immigrated to the United States. In 1947, Tatarczuk enrolled at New York University and earned a master's degree in psychology

In 1959 he earned a Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York City, and then taught at the University of Miami and New York University.
